Your conversations, portable
How to Import ChatGPT Conversations to Claude
To move a ChatGPT conversation to Claude, export your ChatGPT history, convert the relevant chat to readable text, and give that transcript to a new Claude conversation. The converter below handles the JSON step without uploading your export.
Free · No account needed
Open your conversations.json
Choose a ChatGPT or Claude JSON export (up to 25 MB). Preview your conversations, then copy or download one as Markdown. Your file is read in this browser and is not uploaded or saved to your Admix account.
Text only. Images, attachments, tool results, memories, and project settings are not imported. ChatGPT previews follow the active conversation branch. Refreshing or leaving the page clears the loaded file.
Transfer ChatGPT history to Claude, step by step
- Request a ChatGPT export in Settings → Data controls → Export data, then download and extract the archive when it arrives.
- Open conversations.json in the tool below. Search for the conversation you want to bring to Claude.
- Copy the conversation or download its Markdown file. Review the transcript and remove any context you do not want to share.
- Start a new conversation at claude.ai. Paste the text or attach the Markdown file if file uploads are available, then explain where you want to pick up.
- Transfer saved preferences separately: in Claude, open Settings → Memory → Start import and follow the memory import flow. Legacy accounts may show Memory under Settings → Capabilities.
Does importing ChatGPT to Claude move every chat?
Giving Claude a transcript supplies context in a new chat. It does not recreate ChatGPT’s sidebar or restore the original user and assistant messages as native Claude history. Convert the conversations you actually need instead of asking a new chat to ingest an entire archive.
Memory import is a separate step
Claude offers a built-in memory import flow for background information and preferences from another assistant. Export that context from the old service, review the result, and paste it into Claude’s memory import box. A JSON conversation archive and a memory summary serve different purposes; neither automatically replaces the other.
A prompt for continuing the conversation
After adding your transcript, write: “The attached transcript is context from a previous conversation. Summarize the current task, decisions, and unresolved questions. Then help me continue with: [your next question].” Check the summary for missing details before relying on it. For a long chat, transfer the relevant section or a checked summary to fit the destination model’s limits.
Keep your context portable across models
A Markdown transcript also works as reference text in other AI chats. In Admix, use Settings → Import chats to save selected conversations and continue with a model. Your export stays local until you explicitly confirm which conversations to import.
Frequently asked questions
How do I transfer ChatGPT conversations to Claude?
Export your ChatGPT data, extract conversations.json, select a conversation in this tool, and copy or download its text as Markdown. Paste or attach that transcript in a new Claude chat and add your next question.
Can I use Claude’s memory import for conversations.json?
The documented memory flow imports background context and preferences as text. Use a conversation transcript for an individual chat, and the separate memory flow for saved information about you.
Will long ChatGPT chats fit in Claude?
Not always. Context and file limits depend on your destination model and account. Transfer the relevant messages or a reviewed summary if the full transcript is too long.
