Anthropic Took Colossus 1 From xAI. Claude Code Limits Just Doubled.
Quick verdict
Anthropic just bought its way out of a capacity crisis. A 300MW compute partnership with SpaceX, reportedly worth $5B per year and anchored on the Colossus 1 cluster, lets the company drop peak-hour throttles on Claude Code Pro and Max and raise Opus API rate limits "substantially." Anthropic's ARR is reportedly growing at an 8000% annualized rate, which is the number that actually explains why this deal had to happen.
If you have been hitting Claude Code weekly caps faster than you can ship, this is the first real relief in months.
What changed today
- Claude Code Pro and Max: the peak-hours limit reduction is gone. You get the same quota at 2pm as you did at 2am.
- Opus API: rate limits raised "substantially." Anthropic did not publish the new ceilings.
- Weekly caps: unchanged in the announcement, which is the complaint that lit up every comment thread within an hour.
That last bullet matters. Backend compute and per-user weekly quota are two different throttles. More capacity does not automatically mean a higher weekly cap. As one Hacker News commenter put it: "A usage limit increase that doesn't change the weekly limit is practically useless."
The deal itself
The Colossus arrangement is the strange part. Colossus is xAI's flagship training cluster in Memphis. According to Simon Willison's read of the reporting, Anthropic gets Colossus 1 and xAI keeps building out the larger Colossus 2. Colossus 1 has had ongoing environmental controversy over gas turbines and air-quality complaints in the surrounding neighborhood.
That detail is going to follow this deal. You cannot announce a $5B compute partnership without inheriting the operational baggage of the site it runs on.
Dario Amodei called the partnership "visionary engineering plus Claude." Elon Musk announcing in the same week that xAI will be dissolved as a separate entity and folded into SpaceXAI made the whole thing look choreographed. Whether that is the real plan or a Musk-flavored reframing of a business decision, no one outside the principals knows yet.
Why Anthropic had to do this
For most of Q1 2026, Claude Code was the best agentic coding tool on the market and also the most rationed. Pro users hit weekly caps in the first three days. Max plans got peak-hour squeezes. People moved to alternatives not because the tool got worse but because they could not actually use it during work hours.
Meanwhile OpenAI Codex pricing has been brutally aggressive. A common complaint in the launch thread: "$20 on Codex gets you infinitely more usage than Claude." Anthropic was watching paying customers churn over capacity, not quality. The pricing math only works if you can actually use what you paid for.
A 300MW deal is what you sign when your product is winning on output quality and losing on availability.
What this means for your stack
If you were planning to leave Claude Code, wait two weeks. Run the same workflow you abandoned because of caps and see whether you actually hit them now. If the peak-hour change holds in practice, the math on staying gets better.
If you build on the Opus API, re-test your rate-limit budgets. The numbers are higher but Anthropic did not specify by how much. Your 429 handling should still exist; this is "more headroom," not "infinite."
If you have been routing across providers via an aggregator, nothing changes for you yet. Aggregators do not pass through provider-specific rate limit changes immediately, and the per-token API pricing did not move.
Video: the 8000% ARR number
The growth rate that justifies the deal size is the real headline. Anthropic's annualized run-rate growth is the kind of number that forces compute deals like this.
The skepticism is earned
Backend capacity does not equal user-visible quota. If Anthropic does not also raise weekly caps, paying customers will burn through their budgets faster and hit the same wall, just earlier in the week.
Compute deals get re-priced. A 300MW, $5B/year arrangement has renewal terms, performance clauses, and political risk. The Musk-Altman feud has been a public soap opera for two years and there is nothing stopping this deal from cracking on the same fault lines.
Demand is the wildcard. Anthropic's ARR growth implies usage doubles roughly every quarter. Today's "substantial" rate limit increase becomes next quarter's "we are sorry, peak hours are throttled again."
FAQ
Are weekly Claude Code limits actually higher now?
Anthropic's announcement removed peak-hour reductions and raised Opus API rate limits. It did not specifically mention raising weekly caps. Until that number changes, the practical ceiling on heavy users may not have moved.
Does this affect Claude.ai chat or just Claude Code?
The announcement called out Claude Code Pro/Max and Opus API. Claude.ai chat limits were not mentioned as part of the change.
Is xAI really dissolving into SpaceX?
Musk posted that xAI will be folded into "SpaceXAI." No formal filing has confirmed the corporate structure. Treat it as a Musk announcement until paperwork shows up.
Should I cancel my OpenAI Codex subscription?
No. Wait two weeks and benchmark your actual usage on Claude Code with the new limits. If it holds, then look at the math. Our Claude Code vs Cursor vs Codex breakdown covers the comparison in detail.
