Anthropic Is Now Making Its Own Drugs, and Claude Science Is the Reason Why
Quick verdict
Anthropic is no longer just selling AI to drugmakers. It wants to be one. Alongside a new product called Claude Science, the company said it will run its own drug-discovery programs aimed at rare and neglected diseases. The logic is a feedback loop: develop drugs in-house, learn what the tools get wrong, fold that back into the product, and sell the sharper product to paying biopharma customers. It is the Claude Code playbook pointed at the lab bench, and it puts Anthropic in the unusual position of competing with the same industry it wants as a customer.
What actually shipped
Claude Science is a research environment, not a chatbot. Anthropic describes it as one workspace where a researcher can reach dozens of databases, file formats, and analysis tools without stitching them together by hand. It ships with more than 60 built-in functions covering genomics, single-cell studies, proteomics, structural biology, and cheminformatics. The pitch is that it does for scientific research what Claude Code did for software: collapse a pile of specialized tools into a single place the model can drive. It is in beta.
The bigger news is the business move stapled to it. Anthropic's life sciences head, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, said the company will use Claude Science to run its own research into treatments for neglected diseases, the kind traditional pharma skips because the market is too small to bother with. His reasoning was blunt about why a model company would do this at all.
| Piece | What it is |
|---|---|
| Claude Science | Research workbench, 60+ functions, in beta |
| Coverage | Genomics, single-cell, proteomics, structural biology, cheminformatics |
| Own drug programs | Focused on rare and neglected diseases |
| Stated reason | Tight feedback loop between using the tool and building it |
| Not disclosed | Specific targets, funding, timelines, commercialization plans |
Kauderer-Abrams put it this way: "We believe in the power of tight feedback loops, and there's no substitute for having our own experiences alongside you all in the trenches trying to develop drugs." What Anthropic did not say is nearly as telling. There are no named disease targets, no funding number, no timeline for anything reaching a clinical stage, and no answer on whether it plans to sell or license whatever it finds. So far this is a research posture, not a pipeline.
Why it matters
For paying Claude users, the direct effect is small today. Claude Science is a separate surface aimed at researchers, and the models in your existing plan are unchanged. What changes is where Anthropic is spending its attention and compute. A company that a year ago framed itself as a horizontal model provider is now building vertical products, Claude Code for engineers and Claude Science for labs, and in the science case it is going a step further by becoming an operator, not just a vendor. That is a real strategic tilt, and it is worth watching if you are betting your workflow on one lab staying focused on the general-purpose models you actually use.
There is also a tension sitting right next to this launch. In the same stretch, Anthropic's biology and chemistry safety classifiers were broad enough to block ordinary bio-adjacent questions from regular Claude users, with fixes promised but not shipped. So the company is tightening the gate on bio content for the public while opening its own drug-discovery lab behind it. That is defensible on biosecurity grounds, but it means the most capable science tooling and the freedom to use it are moving toward Anthropic's own researchers and its enterprise pharma customers, not the person on a Pro plan asking a chemistry question.
The competitive angle is worth spelling out. Google has AlphaFold and a deep bench in the science-AI space, though it just lost AlphaFold Nobel laureate John Jumper to the industry's talent churn. OpenAI has flirted with science partnerships. Anthropic is trying to leapfrog the vendor role and prove the tools work by using them itself. Whether that produces a drug or just a better product is the open question, but the strategy tells you Anthropic thinks the science market is big enough to build for directly. We track how the three labs stack up in our breakdown of OpenAI vs Anthropic vs Google.

FAQ
What is Claude Science?
It is a research workbench from Anthropic that gives scientists one environment to work across dozens of databases, file formats, and analysis tools, with more than 60 built-in functions for areas like genomics, proteomics, structural biology, and cheminformatics. It is in beta and aimed at researchers and the pharma industry, not general chat users.
Is Anthropic really developing its own drugs?
Yes, though early. It said it will run internal drug-discovery programs targeting rare and neglected diseases, using Claude Science to do the work. It has not named specific targets, funding, timelines, or whether it will commercialize anything it finds.
Why would an AI company make drugs instead of just selling the software?
To build a feedback loop. Anthropic's life sciences head argued there is no substitute for using your own tool in the trenches. Hands-on drug work exposes what the product gets wrong, that feedback improves the product, and a better product attracts paying biopharma customers.
Does this change my regular Claude plan?
No. Claude Science is a separate product surface for researchers. The models in your existing plan are unchanged. If anything, it is a sign Anthropic is spreading into vertical products, which is one more reason to keep access to several AI models instead of betting on one.
